English description

Art Nouveau bronze curtain tieback with whiplash scrolls, c. 1900

A single Art Nouveau embrasse (curtain tieback) in cast bronze or brass, built entirely from flowing whiplash scrolls – the hallmark of Jugendstil. From a butterfly-shaped wall plate with small curls rises a long S-shaped arm with a rolled top, a side scroll and, at the bottom, an oval ring with a small curl inside. A playful, sculptural piece of antique hardware with a warm, dark brown patina.

Why we chose this piece

The lines are pure Art Nouveau: nothing stands still, everything curls and undulates. It is nicely heavy in the casting and has that typical, almost plant-like movement of the early 20th century. A small but very characterful object.

Style and interior

Beautiful with curtains in an Art Nouveau or 1900s house, but also as a decorative element in a contemporary interior. Combine it with other Art Nouveau objects, old glass or wood for a warm, atmospheric corner.

Dimensions: 20 cm high, 11 cm deep, 7 cm wide
Material: cast bronze/brass; iron screws
Style: Art Nouveau / Jugendstil
Period: c. 1900–1915
Origin: Western Europe, probably France, Belgium or Germany
Quantity: 1
Condition: good condition with an unpolished patina, lighter worn on the highest curves (photos 3 and 5). The arm is fixed to the wall plate with two iron screws; the screw heads are rusted, but the joint is firm (photo 7). The wall plate has four fixing holes. Small scratches and signs of use; no breaks, cracks or missing parts. Wall fixings are not included.
