Periode: 20e eeuw, vermoedelijk midden 20e eeuw
Herkomst: onbekend, vermoedelijk Europa
Aantal: 1
Conditie: goede gebruikte staat.

English description

Small demountable table – burr wood with curved legs, plant stand or pedestal

A delicate small table with a square top of burr wood (burr veneer with the typical flames and knots) and four elegant, curved legs ending in a small foot. The piece is demountable: each leg has a tenon that slides into one of four slots on the underside of the top (photos 6–8), so it can be stored flat. Because of its modest size it is more a plant stand, a pedestal for a vase or figurine, or a miniature table than an ordinary side table. The graceful, slightly flaring legs recall the well-known spider table (model H-259) by the Czech designer Jindřich Halabala, in miniature, as well as Art Nouveau and Japonisme. There is no attribution; it is a table in that style.

Why we chose this piece

We fell for the line of the legs: they are cut from a single piece, flare out gracefully and give the small top an almost floating appearance. The burr wood has a beautiful, lively figure, and the clever slot-in system without glue or screws makes it a charming and practical object.

Style and interior

Lovely as a riser for a plant, candlestick, bonsai or figurine on a sideboard, on a windowsill or on the floor next to an armchair. It suits a classic, eclectic or Japanese-inspired interior and combines well with antiques and natural materials.

Dimensions: top 22 x 22 cm, height 30 cm (the legs are flush with the top)
Material: top with burr wood veneer, legs of reddish-brown hardwood (probably mahogany)
Style: in the style of Jindřich Halabala’s spider table; Art Nouveau / Japonisme
Period: 20th century, probably mid-20th century
Origin: unknown, probably Europe
Quantity: 1
Condition: good used condition. The top has a few light scratches and small pale spots in the finish, mainly near the front right edge (photos 1, 4 and 5). The legs show light signs of use and small scratches (photo 7). On the inside of the slots and on the tenons are old pencil marks by the maker to put the legs in the right place (photos 7 and 8). The table stands firmly when assembled.
