Groene glazen mandfles – dame-jeanne, ca. 1930–1960
Groene glazen mandfles – dame-jeanne, vintage bonbonne
Afmetingen: hoogte 40 cm, diameter 34 cm
Materiaal: groen glas, in een vorm geblazen
Periode: vermoedelijk ca. 1930–1960
Herkomst: vermoedelijk Frankrijk of Zuid-Europa
Aantal: 1

English description
Green glass demijohn – dame-jeanne, vintage bonbonne
A beautiful, pear-shaped demijohn in green glass, also known as a dame-jeanne, bonbonne, carboy or wine balloon. Bottles like this were used to store and transport wine, oil or vinegar, usually in a wicker basket. The bottle is mould-blown (the vertical mould seam runs over the body, photos 3 and 5) and has a short neck with a sturdy, rounded collar. The glass has a soft sea-green colour with small air bubbles.
Why we chose this piece
The shape of this bottle is almost a drop: round and full at the bottom, rising gracefully to the neck. The glass has that typical, slightly irregular green tint you no longer see in new glass. A demijohn is a true character piece: large, simple and full of the atmosphere of an old wine cellar.
Style and interior
This bottle suits a rustic, French brocante, industrial or Mediterranean interior. Lovely on the floor next to a cabinet, on an old workbench or table, with a few branches in it, or grouped with other bottles and pottery. Also as decoration in a garden room or conservatory.
Dimensions: height 40 cm, diameter 34 cm
Material: green glass, mould-blown
Period: probably c. 1930–1960
Origin: probably France or Southern Europe
Quantity: 1
Condition: used condition with traces of former use. The bottle is whole, without cracks or breaks; the line over the body is the mould seam from production (photos 3 and 5). Inside there is a beige deposit with a horizontal tide line (photos 1 and 3), and at the bottom and on the side there are rust-brown stains and drip marks (photos 1 and 4). The glass has a small lens-shaped irregularity from production (photo 4). On the neck there are remnants of dark red lacquer or wax and a small rough spot on the collar (photos 2 and 6). The bottle can be cleaned further if desired, but the patina is part of the character of this old bottle.
