English description
French Art Nouveau bronze bust ‘Cendrillon’ by Emmanuel Villanis
A refined French Art Nouveau bust of Cendrillon, cast after a model by the renowned sculptor Emmanuel Villanis. The young woman is shown with a restrained, almost dreamy gaze, her head turned slightly to one side and framed by a pleated headscarf.
Villanis was known for his elegant female busts, often inspired by literature, mythology, opera and romantic heroines. The smoothly modelled face and the soft lines of the neck and décolleté contrast beautifully with the lively folds of her clothing, the layered headscarf and the bow at the back. The tapering base with its decorative crenellated edge gives the figure an architectural foundation.
The bust is signed E. Villanis on the side and titled Cendrillon on the front.
Why we chose this piece
The dark brown patina has worn slightly on the raised areas, revealing warmer bronze tones. That natural wear brings out the details and gives the bust a lovely, lived-in appearance.
