Periode: vermoedelijk 1920-1940
Herkomst: Nederland
Conditie: Redelijk.

English description

Print of a Dutch post mill in stipple technique

A striking print of a Dutch post mill, seen from below, with the steps, the tail pole and the wooden fence in the foreground. The image is built up entirely of fine stipples, giving an almost photographic, grainy effect. Below the image the sheet is titled, numbered 5/100 and signed in pencil; unfortunately the signature is barely legible. The crisp, graphic composition is in keeping with Dutch printmaking of the interwar period.

Why we chose this piece

The unusual worm’s-eye view and the stipple technique make this more than ‘just another windmill print’. We find the early number 5 from an edition of 100 a nice detail.

Style and interior

Suits a Dutch, country-style or, on the contrary, modern minimalist interior; the black-and-white print looks lovely in a narrow black frame.

Dimensions: image 17.5 × 25.5 cm; with mount 29.9 × 34.6 cm
Technique: probably lithograph in stipple manner, signed, titled and numbered 5/100 in pencil
Period: probably 1920–1940
Origin: the Netherlands
Condition: Fair. The paper is evenly toned and has spots (foxing) in the margin and a light vertical damp stain to the left of the image (photo 1). The image itself is good. No tears visible.
