18th Century French Provincial Confiturier Cabinet
A characterful 18th century French provincial confiturier or petit buffet, sourced in France and made in walnut with secondary woods. This compact antique cabinet features a single drawer above a paneled cupboard door, opening to an interior with one shelf. Its restrained Louis XV provincial silhouette, scalloped apron, shaped feet, and beautifully time-worn surface give it the quiet strength and authenticity that make early country furniture so appealing.
The cabinet retains old iron hardware and a richly aged patina developed over many years of use. The front is elegant yet simple, with a molded drawer front, paneled door, and a warm, deep surface full of honest variation. The top is made from wide old boards and shows attractive signs of age, wear, and movement, all fully in keeping with a piece of this period.
The interior is plain and practical, exactly as one would expect from an early provincial utility cabinet. The rear construction, hand-worked character, secondary woods, and old interior drawer lock all suggest an early handmade piece with real age and presence. Condition
Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and long use. Old worming is visible in places, along with shrinkage, surface wear, minor losses, oxidation to the iron hardware, and age-related irregularities throughout. The door closes, though it needs to be lifted slightly in order to fall neatly into place due to wear in the old hinges. There is an old repair or later addition to the underside of one rear foot, and there may be other age-related restorations, adjustments, or replacements typical of a utilitarian provincial cabinet of this age. The cabinet has not been examined in fully disassembled form.
